For the love of ….

I played in a 3-round FoW MidWar tournament at Legions last weekend and had a great time! The games were all fought to the end with fortunes up and down on each turn. The last game was very dramatic….

IMG_4559I had three elements on the objective. Bill Thompson (above) had to kill all three to win the game as he was the defender.

Two carriers were blown to smithereens from two 88s who appeared at long range in ambush (Six shots needing 5,6 to hit…got three hits and killed both.)

The remaining 6pdr gun hunkered down, trying to be as small as possible. Two heavy machine guns blazed away at them…and scored two hits. I saved with one (needing a 5 or 6). I weighed the odds and things looked good. He needed to roll a six. I had a 5/6 chance of a win. Man, I had it made…

until the six stared me in the face! Ackkk!!!

Good game, Bill…..NEVER GIVE UP!!

As a side note, I’ve known and gamed with Bill for about 30 years. He always gives me good games as an honorable opponent. I hope all your gaming buds will do the same!

Pictures from the event can be seen here.

Brit Guard Infantry vs. German Panzerpionier Infantry. (FoW MidWar 1710pts)

Friday, April 25…somewhere in Italy.

IMG_4403

Fitzi arrived with his Germans to challenge the British Guards. The Bletchley Park wizards discovered that the German force was gathered under the direct supervision of the notorious commander known only to the allies as “Royal Tiger” (Shout out to Dan!).

The mission was Hold the Line. Pre-battle intelligence revealed that the Germans were a pionier unit and had the capability of laying mines or wire. The Guards commander scratched his head…hmmmm…night attack or try to defend? Pros and cons were weighed for both options but in the end, the defend option seemed best. Luckily, fate (could Fitzi beat my low die roll of a 2? No way! I AM the Diceman!) decided the Germans would attack.

I chose the Southern part of the board for deployment as I thought the buildings and wooded areas would give me good defensive terrain.

IMG_4397

Only four platoons of my nine were able to deploy before the attack. The yellow pipe cleaners show the half-way line of my forward deployment and his zone 16 inches away. We played on an 8-foot board, so the perpendicular road at the bottom marks the board edge.

The 25pdrs were forward just behind the village. Fitzi’s objective was placed in the village to the center left of the photo.

IMG_4404The Medium Battery of 5.5 inch guns were to the rear, guarding the British objective. (Ye Olde Newcastle Brown delivery van). The staff team from the 5.5s is to the right. Its deployed in the building. I use a Monopoly

Johnny Gurkha meets the Panther Parade: MidWar 1710pts

I met up with Mark Magnuson last week for a MidWar match at Legions Hobbies. I used a Rifle Company (Indian-Tunisia) from the North Africa book:

Rifle-Company-Indian-Tunisia-2

IMG_4224Mark’s “Panther Parade” featured SEVEN Panthers!!

Pgh Late War FoW Tournament

IMG_4214

Commando leader Peter Young fights off a Panther and infantry assault!

I had a great time at Legions playing in the Late War tournament March 28…even though I finished LAST (AGAIN!) Pictures can be found here.

I played Brit Commandos:

Commando-Beaches-with-C3rd-11

Is this list crap?? I though it was decent…my opponents all thought it was decent.

It must be me…or more accurately, my dice. In two separate commando actions in two games I failed to save 4 and 5 stands from fire. Yes, kiddies, I rolled 9 1’s and 2’s. I can’t tell you how many artillery attacks went with no hits or kills. I failed morale checks on two Fearless platoons (rolling 1 and 2). In one battle, I needed a 6 to hit the Veteran enemy troops. In 21 dice rolls I managed NO 6’s!!

I assaulted a bailed Panther tank in the woods with a command stand. We went SIX rounds of combat with me rolling tank terror successfully then failing to hit the tank until I finally failed the tank terror. I can’t even kill a defenseless tank…

Perhaps I need to play a game where low dice is good?

Commando attack vs 21st Panzer

I met with Steve Parillo at Legions Hobbies for a 1695 pts FoW game with my Late War Commando (Beaches with C3rd) forces taking on a 21st Panzer Division tank army. Steve’s version of events can be found here on his blog Huzzah! We rolled up “Fighting Withdrawal” for the mission.

IMG_4151Here Steve does his “UberGerman” pose on his side of the battlefield. I chose a night attack as the terrain had lots of long sight lines which would favor the German tanks and 88. The night vision restrictions would crimp my artillery observers, so I took the ground observer for the naval artillery. I hoped to move close under cover of darkness to have a chance against all the armor. The yellow pipe cleaners mark our set-up areas. The terrain featured mainly fields which provided some cover and woods. A small town anchored Steve’s right and center.

The objectives are also seen in the picture. One is near the left-most pipe cleaner in the woods. One is to the rear of the church. The last is in the small woods near Steve.

My list was from Overlord:

Steve used Atlantic Wall and built a six platoon armored list:

Photos from Cold Wars

My photos from Cold Wars are here

The picture quality isn’t the best as the room we played in was a cold cavern with inadequate lighting. In team play, Howard and I (Team Russian Bear) went 4-3, 4-3, and 3-5. It was respectable but I think we probably would have done better if we had more practice with the army. We didn’t play it at all before the event!

My performance in the singles was abysmal, going 1-6, 1-6, and 2-5. My dice were total crap!

Ram Kangaroos

No, don’t ram the kangaroos. mate!!!….Ram Kangaroos , as in Kangaroo Armored Personnel Carriers built on a Canadian Ram tank chassis. The Ram ranks were Canadian-made vehicles which never went into wide scale production after the Canadians adopted the US Shermans as the main battle tank.

Ram_tanksCanadian archives pictures shows a wartime Ram tank.

Bovington RamUK’s Bovington Tank Museum displays a completed Ram Kangaroo…basically the turret was removed and accommodation was made to carry infantry passengers. It was cramped, but the armor protection gave the troops more survivability than truck transport or even light armored vehicles like half-tracks or carriers.

My Kangaroo platoon for Late War is three Battlefront models (so far…three more on the painting table!)

Breaching Group

In preparing for Cold Wars’ FoW tournament, I needed to finish a ‘Breaching Group’ platoon. This would feature a command Sherman tank, 2 Churchill AVREs, and 3 Sherman flail tanks. I needed the third flail because the AVRE’s can be pulled at the start of the game and replaced with a single flail to be added to the platoon. Since the AVREs only have a range of 4″ they have limited use if there are no buildings or obstacles to clear.

So why use it in FoW? 200 points for 4-5 tanks is why!
